Guidelines and Expectations for Fifth Grade Math

I will be teaching your child mathematics this year. We have a challenging curriculum; however, I am confident that every student will achieve with great success!

I use a program called IXL as an enrichment/remediation program in my classroom. Your child will complete these assignments on his/her iPAD. Fact fluency practice can be done through the FrontRow app.

The major concepts your child will learn this year are as follows: Numbers/Operations, Decimals, Problem Solving, Algebra, Fractions, Graphing, Geometry, and Measurement. We will have learning tasks often to maintain skills and tests will be given at the end of every unit.

I assign homework Monday through Thursday nights. Homework may consist of reviewing multiplication and division facts, completing word problems (learning tasks), and creating problems for other classmates to complete the following day. It is important to make sure that your child can explain not only how they solved the problem, by why it works. Math is not about memorizing steps. True understanding means that a student can teach the concept to someone else using their own thoughts and language. When your child finishes their homework, have a conversation about how and where this could be used in everyday activities.

We will also be working on several projects throughout the school year. Some of those projects include designing and constructing a math board game and creating a project board for the Annual CSS SNAP Math Fair. If you have ideas for some other math projects, or you would like to discuss with the class how you use math in your career, please contact Mrs. White.

Thank you in advance for all of the hard work and dedication you devote to your child! Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns. I have high expectations for all of my students. Everyone can and will succeed!
